![]() Digestion of the food particle takes place inside the cell. The food particles are caught by the collar of the choanocyte and are brought into the cell by phagocytosis. The sponges draw water carrying food particles into the spongocoel using the beating of flagella on the choanocytes. How do Poriferans obtain and digest food? Cells in the sponge walls filter food from the water as the water is pumped through the body and the osculum (“little mouth”). Instead of a mouths they have tiny pores (ostia) in their outer walls through which water is drawn. Sponges have a unique feeding system among animals.
